Family Eyecare of Roswell specializes in utilizing the most advanced technology in contact lens fittings and contact lens materials. Soft Lenses
Soft Contact Lenses were originally introduced in the 1970’s and rapidly became very popular due to their initial comfort. The technology of soft contact lenses has tremendously evolved since their first introduction and they still remain the most popular material. Over 85% of contact lenses prescribed in the US are soft contact lenses. Due to advancements in technology, soft contact lenses currently include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Silicone Hydrogel lenses that are most oxygen permeable and some are approved for overnight wear.
- Toric Soft Contact Lenses correct regular astigmatism.
- Multifocal Soft Contact Lenses address near vision correction, in addition to distant vision correction, for people needing bifocals or progressives.
- Specialty Soft Contact Lenses address irregular astigmatism and mild amounts of keratoconus.
Additionally, most soft contact lenses come in frequent replacement modalities such as, weeklies, biweeklies, monthlies and daily disposables.

Rigid Lenses
Compare to soft contacts, Rigid Gas Permeables (RGPs) lenses have a significantly smaller share of the market. One important reason is that most soft contacts are initially very comfortable, but RGP lenses can take more time to adapt to.
However, RGP lenses have some outstanding features that make them a superior option to soft contacts for certain patients. In the cases of patients with keratoconus or irregular astigmatism, the rigid surface of these lenses can mask the corneal surface irregularities and provide clearer optics and much sharper vision. Also, RGP lenses are less susceptible to lipid and protein build up and offer a reduced chance of infection or allergic reactions. Another distinct benefit is the possibility of myopia control for children with CRT or Ortho-K options. Bifocal RGP Contact Lenses can also provide sharper vision compared to soft multifocal contact lenses.
Orthokeratology
CRT® Brand Contact lenses are therapeutic contact lenses that correct nearsightedness by gently and safely reshaping the cornea while you sleep. Referred to as “Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT)” or “Orthokeratology,” CRT is a safe, non-surgical and non-invasive procedure that temporarily corrects nearsightedness, up to -6.00 diopters, and mild to moderate amounts of astigmatism.
How does CRT work?
When worn overnight, CRT® Brand Contact Lenses gently and safely flatten the front surface of the cornea, resulting in a corneal shape that focuses light correctly onto the retina. When removed in the morning, distant objects will be back into focus.
The CRT effect occurs in the corneal epithelium, which is the top layer of the cornea. The treatment is specifically designed to alter the shape of this tissue and as a result, it corrects your vision.
What are the benefits of CRT for children and younger adults?
Children and younger adults will show a significant slowdown in the progression of myopia (nearsightedness) and, in most cases, may also reduce the risk of developing eye diseases later in life, such as Glaucoma, Cataracts, and Macular Degeneration. In addition to these benefits, the patient will have no need for optical correction during daytime hours.
Because CRT is a non-surgical and reversible option, in cases when the patient has a lack of adaptation, the patient can simply discontinue use of the lenses.
Multifocal Contacts
Multifocal Contact Lenses are an excellent option for patients who wear contacts and also need up-close vision correction, allowing them to be independent of reading glasses.
Soft Multifocal Contacts can be comfortably worn on a part-time or full-time basis. So even if you normally wear bifocal or progressive eyeglasses, you can wear multifocal contacts for sports or special occasions.
For the ultimate in convenience, one-day disposable soft multifocal lenses allow you to discard the lenses at the end of a single day of wear, so there’s no hassle with lens care.
In some cases, RGP Multifocal Contacts can provide superior vision to soft multifocal contacts. However, the adaptation time is generally longer because RGP lenses are initially less comfortable.
Hybrid multifocal contacts are an exciting new alternative. These lenses provide the excellent clarity of RGP lenses and the comfort and easy adaptation of soft lenses.
Our office also utilizes soft multifocal contacts for the purpose of myopia control in children in certain cases.

Contacts for Keratoconus
For individuals who have Keratoconus, and while still in its early stages, their vision can be reasonably managed with soft contact lenses and even eyeglasses. However, as the condition progresses, Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) contacts become the preferred option for achieving the best quality of vision for these patients. RGP lens placement vaults over the cornea, masking its irregular shape with a uniform and smooth surface, to enhance the vision.
Our practice uses a variety of the latest in contact lens technology to address the individual needs of Keratoconus patients. There are custom specialty lenses available in a wide variety of options; these include, soft contact lenses, such as NovaKone and Kerasoft, Hybrid lenses, such as Ultrahealth and CK made by SynergEyes, semi-scleral, scleral lenses and even “piggyback” lenses, which are RGP lenses placed over soft lenses. Any of these methods, or combination of, can be used to meet the specific needs of Keratoconic patients.
